A letter from the founder

Suerte Coffee grew out of a love for coffee over 10 years ago. I spent time as a General Manager and Roaster for a coffee company in Phoenix and eventually visited a coffee farm in Costa Rica. It’s an incredibly special and humbling experience to not just enjoy a cup of coffee, but to see where it comes from, meet the people who grow it, and take that memory back with you when you roast. I knew that this was my passion and was something I wanted to continue.

I’ve lived in many places—grew up in Southeast Alaska, spent a few years in the Midwest, lived in Arizona, and now live in the heart of coffee country in Seattle. To me, a good cup of coffee tastes like home, wherever you are. The name Suerte Coffee originated while I was still living in Arizona. I once found a rusted horseshoe in the desert on a hike—took a photo (you can see this on the home page) and kept it. Years later, my wife and I hung that horseshoe above the front door of our first home in Phoenix. Finding that horseshoe felt like a bit of luck and confirmation that I was following the “right path”, and to me, that’s how a good cup of coffee in the morning feels. Arizona is heavily influenced by so many beautiful aspects of Mexican culture and is also where the idea for Suerte Coffee was conceived.

What's with the goats?

Ethiopian legend says that goats discovered coffee. Kaldi was a legendary goat herder and credited with the discovery of coffee. He noticed his goats would gain energy and avoid sleep after eating the berries of a plant (which would later be known as the coffee plant). A good cup of coffee can make you feel like the GOAt. and now it takes on a whole new meaning.

See what we're sipping on. @suerte_coffee
